  • Grammar

    By G Mostafa
Mondly Grammar rules are not appropriate to make consistent sentences as proper Mandarin simplified from other forum or Chinese Mandarin simplified books. Not good enough to understand Mondly grammar comparisons between president, past & future tense.

It's amazing because they really get languages stuck into your head and it's VERY SOPHISTICATED AND FUN!!!!!
  • Not bad

    By kot_cheshire
Not bad, it seems to work. The approach could be improved though. For example, in Japanese, even though not starting from scratch, I struggle with some daily lessons. What’s their point? I’m not entirely clear.
  • good but not the best

    By Bbambamm
I've been using this app for a while and, honestly, it's pretty good. The daily lesson subjects are pretty random but fun. however, the app is constantly trying to get you to pay. for example, it sends you a notification every morning telling you about their offers. Also, you have to pay to use the chat bots? i finished using the "hello" chat bot and tried to move onto the "restaurant" chat bot but the app told me i had to pay. that kind of annoys me. other than that, it's a decent app.
  • Highly recommended

I love this app! I have tried out about 8 different Japanese language apps and this is one of the best. I think every app has its strengths and it’s a good idea to use several in combination. But this is one of the apps I consider essential in my set. Firstly I completed the whole app using romanji and now I am redoing it all using kanji and hiragana. Being able to swap between the two is really helpful. The recent updates are great improvements too. Well done Mondly! Note: Having had some technical issues with the original app I can also praise the customer service for sorting the problem out for me effectively. I believe that updates since have prevented other users from the same experience.

A poorly designed series of repetitive and mindless exercises that seem to have been flung together by an algorithm, then jazzed up with some hokey “neurological” graphics. On the beginner course, for example, there are a bizarre mix of basic sentences then suddenly complex sentences containing unexplained language. The conversation lessons that come at the end of each topic contain quite natural language that hasn’t been introduced at all. Instead of simply putting the language you’ve learned into practice, you are overwhelmed with a tidal wave of new language. For example, in a “unit” on Countries and Languages you are run through a series of exercises that obsess, I don’t know why, over the structure “he/she translates from Chinese to French” and various simple verbs. This is repeated many times. Then, in the final conversation, you are treated to a colloquial conversation on a date that would be completely impossible to understand were it not for the translation. The word for word translation feature (press on a word in the sentence to see the translation) is unreliable and inconsistent. Also, as many “words” in Vietnamese are composites of two or more words it is almost useless to translate on a word by word level: again, clearly a machine designed course with little or no human oversight. The overall impression is of a course put together hastily or automatically. The writing tasks may as well not be there as they do not require tones or non English vowels. Need to write ào or ẩu? Don’t worry, you can just write ao or au and it will be correct. Many of the recordings are far, far too fast. They just about reach acceptable level with the snail button, but only just. If this is the level of quality of the other language courses I’m surprised at the app’s popularity. It’s riddled with mistakes, bizarre language choices and inexplicable changes in focus.

Paid for premium, worked for a little bit then reverted back to the free version. 0/5 Would be 5/5 if this is fixed
  • Just started

First impressions very good, I like the picture association with the words. The voice recognition is especially good giving me a chance to practice. Occasionally the phonetic spelling (in English) don't link up with the sounds, but very minor.
  • Don't feel confident in buying with basic errors in free material

    By Sarah-flute
I love the idea of this app, and how many languages it has, but particularly for an app which requires payment for advanced lessons, I was startled how many peculiar problems it had in the free parts. I was hoping to use it to brush up my once fluent, now rather rusty Russian. From the very start I was taken aback by some of the choices made; for example, using the conditional to ask for a cup of tea. Correct, but very formal sounding, would sound strange to Russian ears IMO. The insistence on the conditional also means the learner is typing я бы хотел(а) - neither the masculine or feminine version seems to be accepted, only the awkward-to-type version with the feminine ending in brackets. Also there are weird inconsistencies like asking for coffee, but asking for a cup of tea - and only one is accepted in each case. One ends up memorising what the program wants to hear, not to actually produce the language with understanding. The got to the lesson on possession, and the very first sentence was я имею. Now strictly speaking, yep, that means 'I have', but it isn't the usual way one would say it, and indeed the lesson promptly jumped to у меня есть and never went back to the verb. Very weird. And then we get у меня собака: I'm not going to say no one ever says that, but у меня есть собака is standard Russian, and the program won't accept it. Yet again, it's maddenly inconsistent, using есть for a toothbrush but not a cat, with no rhyme or reason. Есть can be omitted, but not in every situation, and in the places Mondly is omitting it? Hmmm. Not convinced. I reported some of the sentences that should have been accepted, but besides that it's difficult to see how to make this workable. It doesn't fill me with confidence to spend £11 on further lessons or to invest any time in trying other languages where I won't know if what I'm being taught is strange, incomplete, or plain old wrong. As of January 2016, the app is still teaching non-standard or overly complex phrases that would sound peculiar/overly formal in many situations or else are just incorrect, and not accepting perfectly standard sentences. A real shame. Some of the languages may be great, but Russian was quite a let down. I'm glad I knew enough to smell a rat. I will probably keep doing the daily lessons while they're there, but I have no confidence in Mondly for accuracy now, and I can't justify spending any money when there are so many problems in just one set of six short lessons. Very disappointing. As of September 2016, the Hebrew course has many similar issues to the Russian course. It's absolutely unsuitable for beginners unless they have really good backup and only use Mondly as a supplement. Most of the problems for Hebrew are that Mondly doesn't deal with gendered language properly, that some of the translations are a little strange or downright incorrect (as with Russian), and that the translations are unreasonably inflexible (as with Russian). Past tense versions of verbs in Hebrew are linked to present tense versions of English words, and while some sentences have both male and female versions, many do not. Strangely, some of those which are neutral (for example אפשר + infinitive) have both male and female versions, but thirty seconds later it's giving you only the male or only the female version of a sentence which is in the present tense and which therefore you need both versions of. If a person learned purely from Mondly, without knowing this, they might very well end up speaking a strange mix of male and female verb forms, which would sound very strange to a native or fluent speaker. Essentially, Mondly Hebrew has the usual Mondly issues plus a couple that are more specific to Hebrew. As a supplement, it's not completely awful, especially given the dearth of material for Hebrew learners, but it really needs to be backed up by more flexible and grammatically accurate study. I would definitely be wary of relying to heavily on it, and it's not good enough as your main source of Hebrew or as something to spend money on. Without some previous knowledge, you will end up wasting time because too much of it just isn't correct and will end up having to be unlearned later. Don't be fooled by the nifty graphics and the long list of languages. Mondly is not doing its job.

  • Crashes in iOS11

Recent update crashes after a few seconds of trying to load. Disappointing. When it works it’s a decent alternative to some of the more overpriced applications out there.

  • Disappointing!

Downloaded the app, as a suggestion for the search of 'Learn Welsh' and the app doesn't support the Welsh language!
  • Prefer this to Babbel

    By V.Melania
I prefer this app to Babbel because there's more interaction with the language. You can practice your speaking skills with a chatbox, learn core vocabulary whilst having different daily lessons. And it is more organised in that not everything you learn is on one page, where you have to sort it out later (like Babbel and other language apps).
