Blinkist - Nonfiction Book Notes in Audio & Text Reviews

  • Interesting concept but blinks should be longer

Managed to read two so far on my days trial. It is an interesting concept but somehow I feel a little cheated that I have not read the whole book - it's almost like reading a spoiler before a movie. It would be nice if it offered different versions of each book e.g. Short , medium and long or even preview and then the whole book.
  • Great idea and concept

This would have got 5*, however, as with many other people I would much rather pay monthly. Would also be good for a broader selection like cliffnotes

I tried the one day sample, and the concept is interesting. However I found what I managed to cover in one day to be a bit too brief and it felt dumbed down, rather like the blurb on the back of a book, which for me begs the question - why not just read the blurb? I think the one day trial is probably not really long enough to test it out, but from what I saw it didn't convince me to pay.
  • Utterly Brilliant

Don't write or rate many apps, but this is such a brilliant concept. Listen to a couple of books pretty much every day on my commute. Only request is that you make the tags visible in the reading list.
  • Amazing Idea

I am a constant learner, but I hate reading - this is the solution I wanted. The only thing I don't like about the app is that you need to pay for the whole year in one installment... If it could be monthly, I would definitely pay.

Initially I thought this was quite good but I subscribed mainly for The audio books. Overtime I found them very American and could do with different voice overs. No offence whatsoever intended but I'd have preferred a wider variety of voices - like british authors having a British accent narration. Be careful of the auto renew which you can change in settings if you aren't using it anymore so you don't just get charged for another year. On the plus these may be great for some people who really want a succinct summary of the books. For me I wanted a bit more on each book but that doesn't mean it isn't right for you.

The apps got a great idea and its comes in a nice package its just way too much for the average person imo, only 1 day trial and minimum spend 40 bucks, Audible is only £7 per month and cancel can anytime 👀 as a student i cannot commit, would rate higher if it was at least a 30 day trial. 10/10 would recommend though

Very useful app and the selection of texts is good as well. The reason for 3 stars only is the upgrade model. I know it is basically done to get the money out of people (they charge upfront for the whole year- minimum £39.99). This is exactly what puts people like me off from subscribing. Leaving the price aside, yearly commintment is a bit too much to expect from people. I think it would be way better if you allowed monthly subscriptions and small monthly payments..

Books are damagingly summarised! Wouldn't advise anyone to subscribe! Bitterly disappointed with it!

I love reading... fiction but I struggle sometimes with making myself read good non fiction. Blinks make it easy to read worthwhile books. It is easier to absorb the information and if the book is good, you might move on to read the whole thing.
  • Great for synoptic reading

Thoroughly useful tool for broadening your mind. A bit like dipping into a pic'n'mix jar of other people's thoughts. Like most valuable resources it could be cheaper.
  • Great app, really useful

Great time saver and great condensed information. Well worth the subscription price.
  • Great concept; needs some refinement.

The idea of the app is great and there are some excellent "blinks" already on the system. However, the selection (although it could hardly be accused of being small) isn't exactly extensive: there are big gaps in most subjects. There's also something disconcerting about reading a summary when you don't know anything about the summariser. Are they an expert on the original subject/text/author, or just some bloke who read the book once and picked out the bits he liked? You don't know. As they vary in quality, I'm assuming there's some major variation in how qualified the authors are. Still, lots of positives too. I love the inclusion of quotes from the original text, and the way that some blink writers have drawn contemporary analogies into their summaries of older texts - they're really adding value there. I find I can read a set of blinks (i.e. one book) in 15 minutes without rushing, so it is a very quick way to get the gist of those books you're interested by but haven't got found to reading in full. I think this app has great potential, and I really do hope they get there.
  • Good idea, bad content

Do you want to pay for book summaries written by high school students? Blinks are just five-page long inspirational quotes. I suggest you find some indie authors on Medium, or just buy the books instead!
