Learn German with Babbel Reviews

  • Mostly good but marred by very poor voice recognition

Good value for money. Easy to use and an effective learning tool except that (1) the voice recognition is so unreliable that the app would be better without it and (2) the eszett character is missing from the keyboard so you get a "wrong" response when spelling any word with a double s. Annoying.
  • OK

This app may be fine for committed learners, who are prepared to pay. There is very little free before the inevitable hard-sell starts, though. All I wanted to do was learn a few words so that I can be polite when I go to Germany on holiday shortly, so I'll just buy a phrase book; it's cheaper.

... if you take it seriously.

Great app for quick learners and for people who wish to learn another language but have a busy lifestyle. The app allows users to go through different exercises again and specific words too. Each exercise takes no longer than 10 minutes and it makes sure to explain everything and show you how to apply it.

Great app, simple, enjoyable and effective.
  • Goodish so far

Only been using it for a short time so far and like it enough to continue. Some bits are frustrating - i am not given all the characters to fill in the answers (e.g. Eszett) so get marked wrong and my clumsy thumbs press the wrong keys on my phone when typing quickly - no chance to correct. The microphone doesn't always pick up my speech either. I need to use it for longer to assess it properly.
  • Good but insufficient

This app offers fast paced exercises for the quick learner. However It requires full interaction and will not work if you do not respond to its prompt. You will not have the possibility of playing/ listening to the soundtrack and you will be expected to hold the pad and to be fully engaged. In short it does not replace the old cd and grammar/ dictionary method.
  • I don't know.

This app might be good for learning a language, but I could only take the first lesson. Already being good at German to start with, this was useless- but I figured I work through a few to get a feel- however you can only do 1 lesson, then you have to pay. I'm sorry, but I can't justify paying for an app that I can't get a decent feel for to start with to know if it's worth it! Should offer a week free trial.
  • Best on the Market

This app is the best way to learn and at your own pace. Even better is the pop-up boxes which explain quirks in the language. Would advise anyone who wishes to learn without having to attend a class. And it can be done on the go. And the customer assistance is brilliant.
  • Excellent companion to desktop version

This is an excellent iPad (and iPhone) app and works in sync with the desktop version. The Babbel teaching method is generally very good except that the dialogue exercises are often spoken too fast and contain many new words which are only covered in more advanced lessons. The idea of the dialogues is that you only need to fill in words already covered but one is still frustrated by the presence of new words. The iPad and iPhone apps would benefit greatly by having a good search facility for vocabulary already covered. This is very well implemented in the desktop version and my review would have rated five stars but for this omission.
  • German keyboard need some work

Started using the app last week and have enjoyed it so far. My only problem is the custom keyboard which is missing the ability to write capital letters - every noun in German starts with one! Also, the keyboard doesn't support new IOS9 features, such as cursor control.
  • MISLEADING ADVERTISEMENT

I saw 'Babble' advertised on the television a lot and had to try this amazing free app out as a flourishing linguist myself. However, when I downloaded it, the introduction was a small flavour of the greetings. I was totally unaware that you could only access one lesson within a courseof about 20 lessons. This app was a complete waste of time and I do not recommend it
  • Support, what support

Would love to use this app, but they took my money and won't allow access - I keep being asked to pay again! Tried contacting support multiple times but no response whatsoever from them thus far. Very disappointed indeed. When support finally arrived, no apology or explanation at all but did fix the problem, grudgingly.
  • Really Good Intro to learning German!

Bought this app after a visit to Germany as I am determined to have better language before my next visit! I don't have very good linguistic skills, so was nervous about this! I am still in the early days, but so far I have found this app excellent - very intuitive with plenty of repetition. It gives the opportunity to 'write' (well, type) as well as speak, and every now and then, little boxes pop up to explain the way the language works. It is split into small chunks which you can repeat as many times as you wish, and there are regular review sections. I bought a 6 month subscription at about £4 month which I think is very good value for money.

Occasional blip and lack of accents when typing in except uses, but otherwise really good. I'm learning a new language.
