Computer Arts: the graphic design magazine Reviews

  • iPad only

I'm absolutely shocked that the latest issue of computer arts is for iPad only. As a magazine which encourages cross device compatibility it's insane that you can view a digital subscription only one device. I shared an iPad with my other half which means I'm unlikely to be able to read this except at weekends, and won't be able to refer to articles whilst talking to clients/working on projects. If this trends continues I WILL be seeking a refund. Awful awful user experience.
  • Super duper app

Great having my magazines in one easy access portal - and the "Feed" is my favourite feature for discovering interesting articles.
  • Love it

Simply the best design magazine out there. The app makes it simple to read the issues I'm missing while traveling.
  • The worst app I've used

Why do I have to 'restore purchases' all the time?! I can't rely on it at all! Every 3rd or 4th time I open the app it forgets what I've bought and then I have to shut it down and restore purchases. Then I have to use more of my data plan downloading magazines again.... Poor!
  • Angry customer

Having bought the series of magazines on Typography, Photography etc at £ 9.99 each, only for Computer arts to stop the app stating if you get rid of the app you lose the editions (I purchased several), I feel unduly robbed by Computer arts! Having updated to iPad Air 2, I can no longer get these magazines and I spent over £70 pounds to buy them!!!! I am seriously dissatisfied and feel cheated and robbed by computer arts magazine!
  • Screen over print?

I had a print subscription to computer arts as a student. I find myself only flicking through the magazines when they arrived. I prefer iPad for reading them now I always take my iPad with me and at a cheaper cost. Only thing I miss with the print version are samples and extras that can be contained with the magazine.
  • Brilliant content

This resource is a must for every creative, regardless of role. Designers an developers alike would find this a priceless tool in their kit. Every issue is packed with timeless tips and lessons.
  • A must for anyone interested in graphic design and illustration.

I don't usually renew a subscription after the trial period as the content can be a false economy, however computer arts magazine is a wealth of inspiration and covers such a broad field of styles and designers it is a resource I always find indispensable. The articles are informative and keep me up to date with the world of illustration and it is nice to see articles by ex tutors or content by fellow graduates from my days at Brighton university...
  • App does not work

I used this app to purchase the latest edition of computer arts for my iPad and 24 hours later I am still trying to get it to download. I tried deleting and re installing the app - I have contacted customer services - I am still waiting for a reply…... THIS APP DOES NOT WORK!!!!!!
  • iPad magazine done right

I used to read CA mag all the time back in the late 90s, it formed the base for a successful design career. I may just subscribe again. Very good use of a tablet, not just another page turn, pinch to zoom eMag. Designed for the iPad, easy to read, enough interaction but not too much to make it annoying. The content also seems to have matured. Given tutorials are easily accessible online, the focus now is more on design and industry.
  • Good but not better than ink on paper!

Definitely loving the printed mag better, I don't think apps will ever truly replace the great look and feel of a well printed magazine.
  • Great... But.

Bought the most recent edition on my iPad only to get a error message saying it could only be viewed on an iPad, umm. UPDATE: After a couple of uninstall/reinstalls it now works… aaaand relax.
  • Lacking subscriber download option

As a print subscriber, I'd like the option of a digital download. I wouldn't consider paying again or swapping for digital only as it's poor value (very expensive) compared with the print issue.
  • Paper version better

3 "issues" I had with the digital, err, issue. 1) no hyperlinks from content page means a lot of scrolling ans swiping. 2) the paper copy would warrant the info about the free cd stuff, including it with the digital copy just lets me know I paid full price and got diddled outta free stuff. Either drop the price or include a place to download the free stuff in the app, or create an account to download it and tell us how to in place of the free cd ad. 3) £4.99? For the digital copy? Seriously? If you are charging full price then reduce the number of ads as your distribution costs are lower or increase the value against the paper version. Good effort just falls short of delivering good value against the paper version.
  • Okay, good but not great

Great magazine but the app is little more than a page turner PDF. Still some really inspiring content though...
  • Sync between apps?

    3
    By Ray Mosley
Have asked their twitter account twice now but no response to asking whether or not issues sync between devices. I have one issue on my phone and one on my iPad and they should automatically sync through newsstand in my opinion but so far they don't. I really think this feature should be there. Essentially these are PDFs of the magazine. It's all good for simply reading the magazine on demand but on an iPhone it's a bit zoom in and zoom out, not ideal and should be tailored per platform in an ideal world.
  • Free issue

There's now - for a limited time - a free issue within the app.
  • Great but not free to those who already subscribe

Seems like a great idea. The interface is pretty ugly considering this is for Computer Arts. Nice to see my favourite magazine on here, but I'm already paying for a physical magazine subscription, and this should come free as I've already paid for the magazines! Have no intention of paying further charges to view the magazine on here as I already pay. I can just download back issues online on the CA website and sync to the phone.
