  • Green Road exploration

    By Sandpipersuk
Uploaded this to my iPhone and iPad. I wanted to use this in conjunction with a mapping project using QGIS of green roads across England and Wales. It really seems better suited for specific “routes” rather than a way of highlighting separate green roads as “tracks”. I hope it works better than the OSmaps App which won’t follow my whereabouts.

I’ve been using this mapping app now for well over 12 years and it’s proved absolutely invaluable for getting to know the great outdoors of the UK and abroad in so many ways.Having access to the 1 to 50 and 1 to 25,000 maps for the whole of the UK means that you’re never without the potential for a walk or a cycle ride no matter where you are in the country, and there have been a couple of occasions when I’ve been in the Lakes and the Cairngorms when I would have been up a navigational creek without it! It’s a technical app using cutting-edge technology, but the customer support is 2nd to none and I really can’t recommend Viewranger highly enough.
  • A faithful companion

  • Good ... but ...

Excellent tracking app when walking. Current version crashes on my Apple Watch 2. Gets stuck & “Cannot connect”. A pain because it was great when it worked.
  • Great app once you find your way around.

Great app for checking out different routes and tracking your own routes.
  • Great map app

A good easy to use map app. All works as you would expect.
  • Great app but uses battery on phone quickly

    By Annon2
I use this app to track my outdoor miles and if using my phone I have no problem. However if I start tracking from my Apple Watch I often lose tracking at the start as it sometimes says can’t connect to phone (but phone always within range). This can be really annoying when you are so far into your walk and you look and it hasn’t tracked any data. I’ve lost several outdoor miles for the ViewRanger Outdoor Challenge as a result of this. The reason for 4 stars is the app really zaps your phone battery and when out on a long walk I have had occasions where my phone has died and not recorded all miles. I would like to see my running total from Challenges on the app as at present you have to log into your view ranger account online for this.
  • Apple Watch issues and iPad just freezes

    By JoeBloggs007
For some reason following a recent update, the app just freezes once it's opened, looks like i'll have to reiki every and reinstall. The app offers plenty of potential but the reliability on the Apple Watch is holding me back in buying maps. Nearly always stops recording after 30 seconds and sometimes complains it can't see the phone which is feet apart - why does it need my phone anyway, its the latest series 3 so should work offline surely??? I'll see how it develops but have gone back to using the workout app of the watch as it's far more reliable.
  • Great app. But what is wrong, I’m having to log in every time I open the app

    By Jgreg82
Every time I start the app it gets me to log in fully. What’s going on there? Seems a bit slow putting google details in each time I use it. Also I have Apple Watch series 3 LTE but it doesn’t seem to work independently of the iPhone app, and as the app isn’t logged in automatically as mentioned above you lose the start of your tracking until you do log in.
  • The standard for off-road nav...

    By Circletimes
Still the Harvey Maps are very expensive by comparison. Also by comparison to the physical maps(which are durable, waterproof and packed with auxiliary information..) Will have to use Christmas money(or save up depending on the season) if indeed any such (funds) are forthcoming..

I have been a fan of ViewRanger for over 4 years. Excellent value, easy to use and makes planning and following walks a real pleasure.
  • Forest of Bowland

    By metro x
I’m a newcomer to the walking game with regards to finding new routes so this app has just started me off wonderfully on a circular route from Slaidburn. I downloaded the bowland map at the last minute and was very glad I did. The route wasn’t very clear without the help from the red pathway in the app. It got us around with little deviation. My only gripe is that the Harvey forest of Bowland map (£12.99) misses off a lot of Bowland such as chipping. My printed Bowland OS map has far more area. It’s a bit misleading not to include the whole of Bowland.
  • Offensive price gouging

    By hollandlef
Although the app itself seems reasonable, the company is trying to rip off their customers in the most outrageous fashion. The map packs they sell are, in at least the case is Spain, and most likely other countries as well, based off free public domain imagery. The 1:25k IGN map set for Spain costs over 200 GBP - which is absolutely outrageous when you consider that VR pays *nothing* to licence it. A company willing to fleece its customers this blatantly is one to be very wary of - I would strongly discourage others from investing money or energy with such a disingenuous business.
  • Excellent App

    By Mikeferny
I bought whole of GB OS 1:50000 whilst on offer for £70 and am really pleased with it. Navigating with mini iPad and Bad Elf GPS device, I can see my exact position . Great for hiking, cycling and motoring. Haven’t tried the more sophisticated functions yet. Needed help from Viewranger about downloading to other devices and got instant reply by email on a Saturday afternoon, which gave clear advice on how to solve my problem. I can highly recommend it the app and the after sale s service.
  • Watch OS4 - can’t dismiss app

    By Mikeskinn
Fantastic app. OS maps is getting better & offers annual subscription to all maps, which is really useful, but still far clunkier and less reliable than ViewRanger (which You can use in other countries; I’ve used it in Germany & Canada). Recent problem with Watch OS4 though is that I can’t get rid of a map from the watch after opening it (I’ve closed iPhone/iPad apps and swiped the map off the watch but it returns. I have to restart watch.
  • Great App

Good to see improvements in usability!
  • Great app

    By seajaysee
Little bit fiddly to use at times but a great app nonetheless. It's also saved my friends and I getting lost on the North Yorkshire Moors in the dark (Lyke Wake Walk). We may still have been there now without it. Can prove invaluable under certain circumstances and it's definitely worth getting if you do lots of walking.

  • Fab map and walking app

    By Towsemouse
Amazing walking routes created by other users and professionals. Some you have to pay for but most are free which is great. I've created a route using both the tracker and the website, both were easy and very helpful. The only reason that I haven't given it 5 stars is because you can't just download one you're of created routes onto you're device, for the day therefore it takes up a lot of memory. And the terms tracks and routes are confusing.
