To celebrate "Yu-Gi-Oh", turning 20, Konami have released "Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Links" a way to play a children's card game on our phones, which turns out to be much more fun than it sounds. The setup of the game is simple. You travel through a cyberspace hub, challenging AI characters to "Yu-Gi-Oh" duels in order to level up characters from the original show. Doing so nets you cards which you can use to make a better deck so you can challenge real people to duels in player v player matches (both local and online). The early stages of the game are rather easy due to the forgiving AI but the challenge quickly ramps up. However, the general simplicity and good tutorials make this one of the few Yu Gi Oh video games I would recommend to beginners. That's partly because the card game itself is also much simpler. The game uses the new "Speed Duel" format. For those acquainted with the series, this means you are only allowed three monsters and three spells or traps at a time (and your deck can have no more than 30 cards). Meanwhile, the amount of cards is much smaller, consisting largely of older cards with only a few newer ones. For those unfamiliar with the series, suffice to say it's all much less confusing, and though series veterans may find it confining, the smaller card pool is very well balanced and duels move at a much quicker pace, making it perfect for playing on the go. However, it's the presentation which really impresses. The game uses voice acting by the cast of the original TV series. Now in hindsight I'm aware that Yu-Gi-Oh hardly had the most sophisticated English voice acting, but regardless it clearly shows the effort that went into this game's production value. Combined with the full animated scenes for the show's iconic monsters (which are jaw dropping for a mobile game) and a catchy soundtrack, it's a real break away from the rather drab design of other Yu-Gi-Oh games. Are there any flaws? Well, for one the pacing begins to slow down later on in the game. Low XP yields means that levelling up can become rather slow and tedious, yet you have to do it because there are some crucial cards in characters' level up rewards. Also some of the special events to unlock new characters and rewards are difficult to the point of cheap (the recent Paradox Brothers event was ridiculous). The biggest flaw is the game's loading times which are absurdly long, as well as the lag on PvP duels. But all in all the game is still worth a look, Overall, "Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Links" is both a nostalgic throwback for veterans, and a good gateway for newcomers who are curious why so many are hooked on a children's card game. I never though I would call "Yu-Gi-Oh" simple but "Duel Links" really is, and refreshingly so. The card game, while still fun, has grown more and more complicated over the years, so it feels great to go back to basics, although it may understandably put some fans off. In short, this is not just a great mobile adaptation of the card game. It's a good mobile game, period. Cheers Konami. Now "It's time to d-d-d-d-Duel!!"

    Good game
  • Brilliant App

This app is brilliant, my only criticism is that it doesn't reflect the original game which had 5 card spaces but otherwise it's still a really good game

  • Deck balancing

    By Rmlrocks
I love this game, I play it relentlessly. However it gives me a brain haemorrhage when I have a perfectly balanced deck and start with 3 spells and a trap card. Literally the only way I can win is when I have the balanced skill on so this needs to be sorted. Also, Joey Wheelers Grit ability is drop dead awful, your view on the probability of weather I loose next turn or not is a terrible. The player should be able to activate this ability when they want to. Also why aren't there events to unlock yugi moto, mokuba Kaiba and Yami Marik as playable characters? Also when do we get limited / forbidden cards?
  • Yugioh duel links
